Avoiding And Solving The 3 Red Lights On Your XBox 360

Anyone who knows a great deal about the X Box 360 has heard of the problem of the 3 red lights, or the Ring of Death. It refers to the appearance of three red lights surrounding the power button on the front of the 360’s console. It signals hardware failure which causes a complete shut down of the unit. Fortunately for those who love their X Box 360 there are ways to fix the 3 red lights.

Luckily it is not difficult to keep the 3 red lights from appearing on your console. They appear when your game system gets too hot. Proper ventilation is the key to keeping this from happening. Do not store your X Box in and enclosed area, such as a cabinet with a door. When you do this the air with in the enclosed area becomes too warm. If the cooling fan can only draw in warm air then it cannot keep the system cool enough to prevent overheating. If you are planning to play your X Box for a long period of time it may be necessary to use an additional fan to blow the warm air leaving the console away from it.

Allowing the power brick to overheat will also cause the ring of death to appear. Do not lay the brick flat on the ground as this blocks air flow. Instead, place it on its end and keep it away from anything that will keep air from circulating freely around it.

Chances are if you are searching for ways to fix the 3 red lights then it is already too late, the ring of death has already appeared. Don’t worry, there are ways to solve this problem and they don’t require any advanced knowledge about the inner workings of the X Box 360.

The first method, called the towel fix, is simple and effective. All you have to do is wrap your unit in towels and leave it turned on for about a half an hour. Oddly enough, this way is often effective. However, it is not recommended that you go this route as it may cause the towels to ignite. If this happens the fact that your X Box 360 has been permanently damaged may be the least of your worries.

A better answer is to pop the cover off of your system and get a look inside. Most often the 3 red lights appear because a wire or two has come off the main circuit board. If you see this is the case then it is possible to repair them using a soldering gun.

If neither of these solutions work for you there is still one option remaining. Send the system back to the manufacturer. The downside is that you will have to do without your X Box for several weeks. The upside is that when the unit is returned the problem will have been eliminated.

Although it is possible to fix the 3 red lights when they appear on the front of your X Box, it is much wiser to avoid their occurrence in the first place. Keep the unit cool and well ventilated and you should be able to avoid the situation entirely.
